In this lecture we will present the basic concepts and underlying philosophy of expressive arts therapy, distinguishing it from other arts therapies. The presenters will do a demonstration session as well. There will be an opportunity for participants to discuss the ideas together and to give aesthetic feedback in small groups.
Stephen K. Levine, Ph.D., D.S.Sc., REAT, is Emeritus Professor at York University (Toronto) and Founding Dean of Doctoral Studies in Expressive Arts Therapy at the European Graduate School (Switzerland) . He is the author, co-author or editor of many books in the field of expressive arts therapy, including Poiesis: The Language of Psychology and the Speech of the Soul; Trauma, Tragedy Therapy: The Arts and Human Suffering; Principles and Practice of Expressive Arts Therapy: Towards a Therapeutic Aesthetics; Foundations of Expressive Arts Therapy: Theoretical and Clinical Perspectives; New Developments in Expressive Arts Therapy: The Play of Poiesis; and most recently Philosophy of Expressive Arts Therapy: Poiesis and the Therapeutic Imagination. He is the founding editor of the journal, POIESIS, co-editor of Ecopoiesis: Eco-human Theory and Practice, co-founder of IEATA (International Expressive Arts Therapy Association), and co-founder of The Create Institute in Toronto. Steve is a poet, actor and clown.
Ellen G. Levine, MSW, Ph.D., ATR-BC, REAT is co-founder of and faculty at The CREATE Institute in Toronto, a training program in expressive arts therapy and Professor and Core Faculty at the European Graduate School in Switzerland. She is an author, co-author and editor of a number of books, including Tending the Fire: Studies in Art, Therapy and Creativity, Principles and Practice of Expressive Arts Therapy: Toward a Therapeutic Aesthetics, Art in Action: Expressive Arts Therapy and Social Change and Play and Art in Child Psychotherapy: An Expressive Arts Therapy Approach.
